How to Dispose of a Mattress

Posted August 18, 2022

Have you been thinking about getting yourself a new mattress? You have not been getting a good night's rest in a while, your mattress is visibly worn, or maybe you just want to switch to a different sized mattress.

Whatever your reasoning, you will need to consider how to dispose of a mattress when you get your new one.

There are several options you can choose to properly dispose of your old mattress. The first step before deciding what to do with your old mattress is to evaluate the condition it is in.

Mattresses in decent shape can be donated or given away more easily. Does your old mattress have bed bugs or extreme stains? If so, your options may be more limited.

Ask Your Mattress Store

In some cases, mattress stores will offer takeaway services along with a new mattress delivery. If you have purchased a new mattress from your local store, as them if they offer disposal.

If you are concerned with where the mattress is going to end up, you can ask the store ahead of time.

Donate or Give Away Your Old Mattress

If where your old mattress ends up is a real concern, donating your mattress is an excellent choice. The SleepFoundation.Org goes into great detail about how to find these other options. One good option for those that do not necessarily need a new mattress but are wanting a new bed for its size or features would be to donate or give away your old mattress.

Companies like GoodWill, Habitat for Humanity, or various charities often accept mattresses and may be able to help you find someone in need of a mattress or send it to a local shelter. Of course, this is only an option if the mattress is still in decent shape. If your mattress has any unpleasant odors, stains, or bad wear and tear, donation is not a feasible option.

Recycling Options

Another option you may have available is to take your old mattress to a recycling facility. This would be a great option for a mattress that is not suitable for a donation or to be given away.

Some recycling facilities offer mattress recycling programs and take the time to break down the mattress and make sure that most of it will be repurposed. You will need to search to see if there is a local recycling center that offers mattress disposal near your area.

Earth911.com offers an online search so you can locate mattress recycling and disposal centers near you. There are several mattress disposal and recycling options in the Charlotte, NC area.

DIY Mattress Recycling

If there are no recycling facilities located near you, you can always take the time to recycle or repurpose the mattress yourself. This can be done in a lot of different ways such as gardening, home repairs, and arts and crafts. HomeHacks.co offers 40 ideas on how you can repurpose parts of your old mattress.

Throw It Out

The final option would be to throw the mattress out. If your local mattress store offers disposal this would of course be the easiest route. Although if your local mattress store does not offer this as an option, then you would have to do this yourself.

Oftentimes, you will not be able to leave your mattress at the curb for trash pickup. We suggest contacting your local municipality to see if you need to schedule a pickup or if they offer disposal services for bulky items.
